Pune Gets Massive New IT Park Plan: 572 Hectares in Purandar

Will Pune finally get another world-class IT hub to rival its existing tech parks? That’s what many are asking after the Maharashtra government started seriously considering a sprawling 572-hectare plot in Purandar for a new information technology park.

The simple answer: yes, but it’s still in the planning stages. The government hasn’t formally approved anything yet, but officials are actively evaluating the Purandar location as a potential home for a next-generation IT park that could attract major companies and create thousands of jobs.

Why This Matters for Pune’s Tech Future

Pune already hosts major IT companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, but the city’s existing tech parks are running out of space. A new 572-hectare facility would be massive — roughly equivalent to 800 football fields — giving companies room to expand without moving to other cities.

Purandar, a taluka on Pune’s outskirts, offers something the city’s central areas can’t: abundant land at reasonable costs. This makes it attractive for developers who want to build modern facilities with all the amenities companies expect today.

The timing is crucial too. With other Indian cities aggressively competing for IT investments — Bangalore, Hyderabad, and even smaller cities — Pune needs to stay ahead. A new park signals confidence that the city remains serious about being India’s tech hub beyond just software services.

What Comes Next?

Right now, the government is in the evaluation phase. They’re likely studying infrastructure requirements, connectivity, and how to develop the site sustainably. Environmental clearances and land acquisition will be the next hurdles.

If approved, the project could take two to three years before construction begins. Companies won’t move in immediately, but once it’s ready, the park could potentially add 50,000 to 100,000 jobs — though that depends entirely on how many companies decide to set up there.

There’s also the question of how this fits with Pune’s growth plans. The city is already expanding rapidly, and a project this size needs careful planning to avoid traffic chaos and infrastructure strain. Smart infrastructure and good public transport connections will be essential.

For Punekar job seekers, this is genuinely good news. More IT parks mean more opportunities, healthier competition between companies for talent, and potentially better salaries and benefits. Real estate prices in and around Purandar might also move up if the park actually happens.

The government’s move shows it understands Pune’s potential isn’t exhausted yet. Whether this ambitious plan actually transforms into a thriving tech park will depend on how well they execute the next few months of planning and approvals.
