Cold Wave Alert: Six States Brace for Freezing Temperatures

Is your region about to get hit by a cold wave? If you’re in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, or Chhattisgarh, the answer is yes — and you need to prepare now.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave forecast for these six states and union territories over the coming days. This means temperatures will drop significantly below normal, bringing biting cold that’ll affect your daily routine, health, and even travel plans.

What Exactly Is a Cold Wave?

A cold wave isn’t just regular winter weather. The IMD classifies it when maximum temperatures fall 6.5 degrees Celsius or more below the seasonal average for a region. When minimum temperatures dip 4.5 degrees below normal, that’s also flagged as a cold wave condition.

Think of it this way — if Delhi normally sees 18 degrees in December, a cold wave could push it down to 10-12 degrees. That’s the kind of intense chill we’re talking about.

Who Should Really Worry?

If you’re elderly, very young, or have existing respiratory or heart conditions, this weather demands caution. The sudden temperature drop can aggravate asthma, trigger pneumonia, and worsen blood pressure issues. Construction workers and people who work outdoors face genuine health risks too.

But honestly, even healthy adults need to take this seriously. Cold wave-related deaths do happen, usually among vulnerable groups in remote areas with limited access to heating.

Delhi commuters should expect foggy mornings that could disrupt traffic and flights. Punjab’s agriculture — especially the wheat harvest season — could face stress if frost develops. Haryana’s dairy farmers will see milk production dip as cattle struggle in extreme cold.

How to Protect Yourself

Layer your clothing — thermal wear, sweaters, and heavy coats aren’t fashion statements in a cold wave, they’re survival gear. Keep exposed skin to a minimum when stepping out. Stay indoors during early morning and late evening hours when temperatures bottoms out.

Stock up on warm beverages, nutritious food, and any medicines you need regularly. Keep your home heating systems checked — faulty heaters can cause carbon monoxide poisoning when used improperly in sealed rooms.

If you see homeless people or stray animals struggling, contact local authorities. Many NGOs and municipal bodies run winter shelters, but they need to know where help is needed.

The next few days will be challenging for northern and central India. Keep your phone charged, stay informed about updates from weather authorities, and check on elderly neighbors or relatives who live alone. Cold waves test communities, but they’re manageable with basic precautions and looking out for one another.
