Heat Wave Grips Konkan, But Pune Gets Relief Below 40°C

While coastal Konkan is reeling under a severe heat wave, Pune is catching a break. The India Meteorological Department’s latest bulletin shows the coastal region facing dangerously high temperatures, yet the city just 200 kilometers away remains comparatively cooler, staying below the 40-degree Celsius mark.

This unusual split in weather patterns across Maharashtra highlights how local geography plays a decisive role in determining who sweats it out and who doesn’t. Konkan’s coastal plains, with their unique terrain and moisture patterns, are bearing the brunt of this year’s heat, while Pune’s elevated plateau offers some natural insulation from the worst of it.

Why Konkan Is Burning While Pune Stays Relatively Cool

The coastal strip of Konkan typically experiences intense heat during these months, but this year’s intensity has caught weather experts’ attention. The IMD’s heat wave alert isn’t just a routine summer warning—it signals temperatures that could pose genuine health risks, especially for outdoor workers, elderly citizens, and those without air conditioning.

Pune, sitting at a higher altitude and with better ventilation from surrounding hills, naturally remains 2-3 degrees cooler than its coastal counterpart. This geographical advantage has historically made it a more bearable place during summer, though nowhere in Maharashtra is truly escaping the heat this season.

The meteorological department expects these conditions to persist for at least another week, with afternoon temperatures in Konkan potentially crossing 42 degrees Celsius in some pockets. Pune’s forecast shows it hovering just under 40 degrees, which provides little comfort but slightly better conditions for daily activities.

What This Means for Your Summer Plans

If you’re in Konkan, the IMD’s heat wave flag means genuine caution is needed. Stepping outside during peak afternoon hours (11 AM to 4 PM) can expose you to heat stroke risk. Workers in construction, agriculture, and outdoor sectors need extra hydration and frequent breaks in shade.

For Pune residents, while the mercury isn’t touching 40 degrees yet, the still-intense heat demands sensible precautions. The apparent “coolness” shouldn’t make you complacent about sun exposure, dehydration, or ignoring heat-related symptoms.

Water consumption should be your priority—not just when you’re thirsty, but throughout the day. Keep electrolyte drinks handy, wear light-colored cotton clothes, and avoid unnecessary midday ventures outdoors.

The IMD bulletin serves as a reminder that even as some regions face extreme conditions, neighboring areas might experience relative relief—but this doesn’t mean you can ignore basic heat safety. Monsoon is still weeks away, and summer’s grip will likely tighten further before relief arrives.
