Purandar Airport: Only Way Forward for Pune, Says Sharad Pawar

Senior political leader Sharad Pawar has made it clear that there’s simply no other option for Pune but to move ahead with the Purandar airport project. He dismissed concerns about alternatives, saying the new airport is essential for the region’s growth.

Why Pune Needs This Airport

Pune is bursting at the seams. The city’s economy is booming, IT companies are expanding, and passenger traffic at the existing airport has hit a ceiling. A new airport at Purandar, about 40 kilometers from the city, is the only realistic way to handle future demand.

The current airport simply can’t absorb the growth Pune is experiencing. Pawar’s statement reflects what many business leaders have been saying for years—delay isn’t an option anymore.

Real Benefits Beyond Just Flights

This isn’t just about planes landing and taking off. Pawar emphasized that the airport will unlock development across the entire region. New roads, rail connections, warehouses, hotels, and logistics hubs will spring up around it.

This kind of infrastructure typically creates thousands of jobs. Real estate values in surrounding areas tend to climb. Small towns near the airport get better connectivity and economic opportunities.

For farmers in the Purandar area whose land will be acquired, the government has promised compensation and rehabilitation. It’s a trade-off that development projects always involve, and one Pawar believes is worth making.

The airport could position Pune as a major aviation hub for western India. Airlines would use it as a connecting point. Cargo operations would expand. International flights might become more frequent.

What Happens Next

The project is in advanced stages of planning and clearance. Construction timelines depend on how quickly land acquisition and environmental approvals move forward. These things never happen overnight in India.

Opposition exists, mainly from farmers and environmental groups concerned about agricultural land use. But Pawar’s statement signals that the state government views this as non-negotiable for Pune’s future.

The project will be a major test of whether large infrastructure plans can actually get executed in Maharashtra. If it succeeds, it could serve as a model for other cities needing airport expansions.

Pune’s growth story isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Whether it’s tech companies, startups, or manufacturing units, they all need better connectivity. The Purandar airport represents the bet that Pune is ready to play in a bigger league.

The real question now isn’t whether to build it, but how fast the state can get it done without losing too much time.
