Thailand Airport Fees: Will Your Next Trip Get Costlier?

Planning a trip to Thailand soon? You might be wondering if your flight ticket is going to cost more. Well, yes, for those flying internationally from six major airports in Thailand, the departure fee has indeed increased starting today.

This isn’t a sudden surprise; the Thai government had announced this change earlier. The new fee structure applies to passengers leaving the country from six key airports: Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok), Don Mueang International Airport (Bangkok), Phuket International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Hat Yai International Airport, and Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport. These are the very airports that handle the bulk of international travel to and from Thailand, making this a significant change for many travellers.

What Exactly is Changing?

For economy class passengers, the international departure fee has gone up by 100 Baht, bringing the new total to 500 Baht (which is roughly ₹1150, depending on the current exchange rate). For passengers flying in business or first class, the increase is a bit steeper, with the fee rising by 200 Baht to a new total of 700 Baht (around ₹1600). This fee is usually included in your flight ticket price, so you’ll likely see it reflected in the final cost when you book your next flight.

Why the Fee Hike?

The main reason behind this increase is to generate more revenue for the Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT). These funds are crucial for the AOT to continue upgrading and maintaining its airport infrastructure. Think of it as a small contribution towards ensuring smoother travel experiences, better facilities, and enhanced safety for all passengers in the future. The AOT hopes that this modest increase will help them keep pace with the growing demands of international air travel and modernise their operations.

For Indian travellers, this means that while Thailand remains an attractive and popular destination, the overall cost of visiting might see a marginal increase due to this new airport fee. It’s always a good idea to factor in such charges when budgeting for your international trips. While the fee is relatively small on an individual basis, its impact will be felt across millions of international travellers passing through these busy hubs each year. This move by Thailand is also something to watch for other countries considering similar revenue-generating measures for their airports.
