Maharashtra Cabinet Row: Ajit Pawar Faction Struggles to Agree on Portfolios

Maharashtra’s government formation has hit a snag. The Ajit Pawar camp can’t agree on who gets which Cabinet position, and negotiations are turning messy. This delay is holding up the entire cabinet expansion that was supposed to happen by now.

Why the Deadlock Matters

Every faction in the coalition wants the best portfolios — finance, home, public works. These aren’t just titles. They control budgets, power, and influence across the state. When multiple groups are fighting for the same positions, nobody wants to back down.

The Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party is internally divided on who deserves what. Some leaders feel sidelined, others think they’re being offered weak departments. This has created tension within the faction itself, making consensus impossible right now.

Meanwhile, their coalition partners are watching closely. The Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena factions have already staked their claims. If the NCP can’t sort itself out, it weakens their bargaining position in the larger government structure.

What Happens Next

The government needs to move fast. Key ministries like finance and home are currently without permanent ministers — that’s not a stable situation for long. State machinery needs clear leadership in every department.

Negotiations will likely continue behind closed doors. Some leaders might have to accept portfolios they didn’t want. Others could be offered berths in state boards or corporations as compromise. The real test comes when everyone sits down for final decisions.

This kind of portfolio haggling isn’t unusual in Indian coalition politics. But the longer it drags, the more it signals weakness to opposition parties and voters. Maharashtra can’t afford prolonged instability while waiting for ministers to sort out their disputes.

The Ajit Pawar faction needs to find common ground quickly — either by making tough choices or by reshuffling expectations. Once they do, the full cabinet expansion can finally move forward. Until then, Maharashtra’s governance remains in limbo, and that’s never ideal for a state of this size and importance.

Keep an eye on this space. When the cabinet finally forms, it’ll tell you a lot about who really holds power in Maharashtra’s government.
