Dacoit breaks Bollywood rules with dual Hindi-Telugu release strategy

Bollywood has a new experiment on its hands, and actor Adivi Sesh just revealed why the filmmakers decided to do something completely different. The upcoming film Dacoit: Ek Prem Katha isn’t a dubbed version in Hindi — it’s been shot in both Hindi and Telugu simultaneously, a rare move in Indian cinema.

At the trailer launch in Mumbai, Sesh explained the bold thinking behind this decision. He pointed to Akshay Kumar’s 2018 film Pad Man as the inspiration. That film told the true story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Tamil innovator, but was set in Madhya Pradesh and made entirely in Hindi. It became a pan-India success without being a dubbed version.

Why shooting separately makes a difference

The logic is simple but powerful. When a film is dubbed from one language to another, something always gets lost — the timing of dialogues, the emotion in an actor’s voice, the cultural nuances. By shooting in both languages at the same time, the team ensures that Hindi and Telugu audiences get an authentic experience tailored to their own film culture.

This isn’t just about translation. It’s about creating two versions that feel natural and locally relevant to each audience. The actors have to deliver their performance twice, which is exhausting but produces genuine results for both markets.

The film stars Adivi Sesh, Mrunal Thakur, Anurag Kashyap, and Zayn Marie Khan. It’s a period drama with a romantic angle, which explains why reaching both Hindi and Telugu audiences matters tremendously for the box office.

What this means for Hindi cinema’s future

For years, Bollywood treated South Indian films as secondary — they’d buy the rights and remake them in Hindi, or simply dub them. This approach often failed because audiences could sense the artificiality. Dacoit represents a shift in thinking.

More filmmakers are realizing that India’s film market isn’t one monolith. A story that works in Telugu cinema has its own grammar, its own rhythm. If you want to genuinely connect with audiences across regions, you can’t just translate — you need to create.

The success of Pad Man proved that a Tamil-origin story could become a Hindi hit if executed with respect and authenticity. Now filmmakers are taking that lesson seriously and investing in simultaneous bilingual shoots instead of the easier dubbing route.

Whether Dacoit: Ek Prem Katha becomes as successful as Pad Man remains to be seen. But the fact that major actors and directors are willing to shoot two full versions shows that Hindi cinema is finally acknowledging what audiences have always known — one size doesn’t fit all in Indian movies.
