Delhi’s Air Quality Improved 17% in 7 Years, But NCR Still Struggles

Is Delhi’s air getting cleaner? Yes, but not fast enough. New data shows Delhi has reduced PM10 pollution by 17% over the past seven years, yet the National Capital Region remains one of India’s most polluted areas.

This progress comes from India’s National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), launched in 2019 to tackle air pollution across the country. The programme sets targets for cities to reduce pollution levels gradually over time.

What’s PM10 and Why Should You Care?

PM10 refers to fine dust particles floating in the air that we breathe. These particles come from vehicle exhaust, construction dust, factory emissions, and burning of crops. When you see hazy skies during winter, you’re looking at PM10 pollution.

These tiny particles get stuck in your lungs and can cause serious health problems like asthma, bronchitis, and heart disease. Children and elderly people are most at risk.

Delhi Made Progress, But NCR Is Still Behind

Delhi’s 17% reduction is real progress that happened between 2015 and 2022. The city implemented measures like banning construction during winter months, controlling traffic, and monitoring industrial emissions more strictly.

However, the bigger picture tells a different story. The National Capital Region—which includes cities around Delhi like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram—still has some of the worst air quality in the country. This happens because pollution doesn’t stay within city borders; it spreads across the region.

When you live in Ghaziabad and travel to Delhi for work, you’re still breathing polluted air. The problem requires coordination between multiple state governments, not just one city.

Why Is Progress So Slow?

Cleaning air pollution is like cleaning a very dirty room—it takes time and consistent effort. Experts point to several challenges: rapid urbanization and construction, increasing vehicle numbers, agricultural burning in neighboring states, and industries that resist stricter pollution norms.

The NCAP target was to reduce pollution by 20-30% by 2024 in major cities. While Delhi is on track, many other cities are falling behind.

The good news? The government is investing more money in monitoring systems, electric public transport, and green spaces. Several metro cities have launched real-time air quality apps so you can check pollution levels before stepping out.

What happens next depends on whether this momentum continues. If governments stick to stricter emission rules and industries cooperate, the NCR region could see better air quality in the coming years. But without sustained action, we could slip backward. Your health literally depends on the air you breathe, so this progress—while modest—matters.
