Dense Fog Alert: North India Braces for Poor Visibility This Week

You know that feeling when you’re stuck in traffic and can barely see the car ahead? Well, that’s about to become reality for millions across North India over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department has issued a forecast warning of dense fog blanketing Delhi, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab.

If you’re commuting in these regions, buckle up. Dense fog means near-zero visibility in some areas, which directly impacts traffic flow, flight operations, and train schedules. Morning and evening commutes are particularly affected, so plan extra time for your journey.

What’s Behind This Foggy Spell?

This dense fog isn’t random—it’s part of North India’s winter weather pattern. Cold nights combined with moisture in the atmosphere create these thick fog layers that stick around until late morning. The Indo-Gangetic plains, which include most of the affected states, are especially prone to this during December and January.

The weather department expects the fog to be particularly thick over Bihar and parts of Punjab, potentially lasting through several hours of the morning. Delhi and Haryana will also see significant fog, though it might clear slightly earlier in the day compared to other regions.

Why This Matters for You

If you drive, this is serious stuff. Fog reduces visibility to dangerously low levels, increasing accident risks on highways and city roads. Schools and offices in these regions have sometimes adjusted timings during peak fog season, so stay updated with local announcements.

Train and flight operations often face delays too. If you’ve got travel plans, check with Indian Railways or your airline before heading out. A journey that normally takes two hours might take significantly longer.

For those with respiratory issues or elderly family members, dense fog can make breathing uncomfortable. The cold combined with fog particles makes air quality worse, so it’s a good idea to stay indoors if you’re vulnerable, or at least limit outdoor activities during peak fog hours.

The good news? This isn’t unusual for this time of year, and it’s a temporary phenomenon. Once the sun gets stronger or weather patterns shift, the fog clears up. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will update forecasts as needed.

In the meantime, if you’re in the affected areas, drive slow, use your headlights, and give other vehicles plenty of space. Stay safe out there, and don’t let the fog catch you off guard during your morning commute.
