India Slammed for Bullet Train Delays, MEA Fires Back

A former Japanese minister has criticized India for the slow progress of the ambitious bullet train project, calling it ‘sheer recklessness.’ But the Ministry of External Affairs has hit back, downplaying the delay as a minor issue.

The bullet train project, which aims to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad with a high-speed rail link, has been in the works since 2018. However, the project has been plagued by delays and cost overruns, with the estimated completion date now pushed back to 2028.

Japan’s Reaction

Kenji Kosaka, a former Japanese minister, recently made headlines for his scathing remarks on India’s handling of the project. Kosaka, who was part of the Japanese team that helped India bid for the bullet train project, expressed his disappointment and frustration at the slow pace of work.

‘It’s a case of sheer recklessness,’ Kosaka was quoted as saying in a media interview. ‘If India doesn’t get its act together, it will be a huge loss for the country.’ Kosaka’s comments have sparked a fresh debate on the feasibility of the bullet train project and India’s ability to manage it.

MEA’s Response

However, the Ministry of External Affairs has downplayed the delay, saying it’s a minor issue that won’t impact the project’s overall timeline. ‘We are aware of the delays in the project, but we are confident that it will be completed on schedule,’ said an MEA spokesperson.

The MEA spokesperson emphasized that the project is a collaborative effort between India and Japan, and both countries are working together to resolve the issues. ‘The project has faced several challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which has delayed the work. But we are hopeful that it will be completed soon,’ the spokesperson added.

India’s Plans

Despite the delays, India is still keen to push ahead with the bullet train project. The government has committed to investing over Rs 1 lakh crore in the project, which is expected to create thousands of jobs and improve connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

However, critics argue that the project is a white elephant, and the money spent on it could be better utilized in other areas, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. The debate on the bullet train project is likely to continue, with opinions divided on its feasibility and benefits.

As the project inches closer to completion, one thing is clear: India must get its act together to make the bullet train a success. The country can’t afford to squander the opportunity to create a world-class transportation system that can change the face of urban mobility.

What’s Next?

India will need to work closely with Japan to resolve the issues plaguing the project. The MEA has already initiated talks with the Japanese government to address the delays and cost overruns. The next few months will be crucial in determining the fate of the bullet train project.

Will India be able to deliver on its promise of a world-class transportation system? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: the bullet train project is a massive opportunity for India to showcase its engineering prowess and commitment to innovation.

As the country navigates the complexities of the project, one thing is clear: India must learn from its mistakes and get its act together to make the bullet train a success. The stakes are high, but the rewards are too great to ignore.
