Karnataka Cracks Down on Illegal LPG: 46 Cylinders Seized

You’ve probably seen it — someone’s neighbour storing LPG cylinders in a cramped apartment or a small shop using unmarked gas bottles. It’s common, it seems harmless, but it’s also illegal and dangerous. Karnataka police are now taking this seriously.

Bengaluru’s police department has launched a citywide operation targeting unlicensed LPG use and distribution. The crackdown isn’t just talk — enforcement teams have already seized 46 illegal cylinders in Yadgiri district alone, signalling that authorities mean business.

Why the sudden crackdown?

Illegal LPG cylinders pose serious safety risks. These unmarked bottles often lack proper safety certifications, have faulty valves, and can leak without warning. When stored in homes or small commercial spaces without ventilation, they become fire hazards waiting to happen.

The seizures in Yadgiri are just the beginning. Police teams are conducting surprise inspections across the city, checking residential colonies, restaurants, small eateries, and shops. Anyone caught with unlicensed cylinders faces penalties and potential legal action.

What you need to know

If you use LPG at home or run a small business, make sure your cylinders are registered with authorised distributors. Legal cylinders come with unique identification numbers, pressure gauges, and proper certification from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

Small eateries and dhabbas are particularly vulnerable because they sometimes rely on cheaper, illegal supplies to cut costs. But the savings aren’t worth the risk — one accident could be catastrophic for the business, customers, and neighbouring homes.

The government has made it easier to get legal cylinders. You can order through official distributors, and the process is straightforward. Prices are regulated, so going illegal doesn’t even save much money anymore.

If you spot illegal LPG cylinders in your neighbourhood — stacked in someone’s kitchen, outside a restaurant, or in a tiny shop — you can report it to your local police station. Anonymous complaints also work.

This crackdown reflects a broader push for safety standards across India’s cities. As urban areas grow denser, with families living closer together, one person’s negligence becomes everyone’s problem. Karnataka’s operation sends a clear message: authorities are watching, and breaking these rules will have consequences.

The inspections are expected to continue across Bengaluru and other major cities in the state, so businesses and households should act now to ensure compliance.
