Madhya Pradesh gripped by fog chaos as cold snap cripples transport

Madhya Pradesh is facing its harshest winter conditions in weeks, with temperatures plummeting below 3 degrees Celsius and visibility reduced to just a few meters in several districts. The severe cold wave and dense fog blanket have brought bus services, train operations, and highway traffic to a crawl, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and frustrated.

Over the past 48 hours, major highways connecting cities like Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur have seen multiple accidents and delays. State transport buses are running hours behind schedule, while private operators have cancelled several routes entirely. The meteorological department warns that conditions will persist for at least another week.

When visibility becomes life-threatening

Fog so thick that drivers can barely see 20-30 meters ahead is no joke. On National Highway 3 alone, traffic police reported 14 minor collisions in a single morning. Long-distance buses are crawling at 20 kmph instead of their usual 60 kmph speed. Railway authorities have issued fog-related alerts, asking drivers to exercise extreme caution.

The situation is particularly severe in the Narmadapuram and Hoshangabad regions, where fog rolls in from early morning and doesn’t lift until nearly noon. Local schools have announced delayed opening times, and many offices are advising work-from-home where possible. Hospital emergency wards report a spike in respiratory complaints, especially among elderly residents and children.

What this means for winter travel across India

Madhya Pradesh’s current crisis is a preview of what millions of Indians face every winter. The northern plains and central regions experience similar fog-related disruptions annually, but this season’s intensity is catching many unprepared. If you’re planning travel through MP or any central Indian state between December and February, expect delays.

Commuters are being urged to allow extra travel time, keep their vehicle headlights on even during daytime, and avoid night journeys if possible. Many companies are reconsidering their winter travel policies. The Madhya Pradesh government has deployed additional traffic personnel and is working with transport operators to maintain minimum schedules.

Weather experts predict marginal improvement by next week as a western disturbance moves in, potentially bringing some warmth and clearing the fog layer. Until then, anyone traveling through central India should check road and rail updates before heading out.

The bigger lesson here? India’s transport infrastructure remains vulnerable to seasonal weather disruptions. Better fog detection systems, stricter speed enforcement, and real-time traffic updates could save lives and prevent the chaos we’re seeing now.
