Madhya Pradesh is experiencing an unusual weather pattern this winter, with major cities like Bhopal and Indore recording temperatures colder than Pachmarhi, the state’s famous hill station. This reversal of the typical seasonal pattern has caught meteorologists and residents by surprise alike.
Normally, hill stations stay significantly colder than plains due to altitude. But this season, the mercury in Bhopal has dipped to levels rarely seen in recent years, while Indore is matching or even undercutting Pachmarhi’s readings. Early morning temperatures in both cities have been hovering around 8-10 degrees Celsius, well below the seasonal average.
What’s Causing This Unusual Cold Snap?
The India Meteorological Department attributes this to a combination of factors — strong northwesterly winds from the Himalayan region, clear skies with minimal cloud cover, and a high-pressure system settling over central India. These conditions trap cold air over the plains, preventing it from dispersing.
Unlike typical winters where moisture-laden systems bring moderate temperatures, this year’s pattern has created exceptionally dry and cold conditions. Wind speeds have also been higher than usual, making the air feel even colder than the actual temperature readings.
The unusual pattern isn’t limited to just these cities either. Several districts across MP have reported similar anomalies, with smaller towns sometimes showing even lower temperatures than the major metros.
Impact on Daily Life and Health
For residents, this means wrapping up warmer than expected. Hospitals have reported a slight uptick in cold-related illnesses, particularly respiratory issues and joint pain among elderly citizens. Schools have extended winter breaks in several districts as a precautionary measure.
The agricultural sector is also watching closely. While some crops benefit from cooler temperatures, the sudden cold spell could damage tender plants and affect irrigation schedules. Farmers in fruit-growing regions are particularly concerned about frost damage.
Power consumption has also surged as people use heaters and additional blankets, putting some strain on electricity supply during evening peak hours.
The meteorological office expects this cold pattern to persist for another week or two before moderating. However, they’re warning residents not to let their guard down just yet. More cool winds could sweep in before January ends, keeping temperatures below normal for the next few weeks.
If you’re in Bhopal or Indore, keep your winter wardrobe handy and stay updated with local weather forecasts. This year’s winter might be shorter than usual, but it’s definitely making its presence felt.
