Nagpur explosives factory blast kills 20, leaves 15 critical

A massive explosion at an explosives manufacturing unit near Nagpur has claimed at least 20 lives, with another 15 workers in critical condition at hospitals across Maharashtra. The blast occurred at the factory during working hours, leaving rescue teams scrambling to locate survivors in the rubble.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes of the explosion. Fire brigades, ambulances, and disaster management teams worked through the afternoon to pull out trapped workers and extinguish fires that erupted after the initial blast.

What We Know So Far

The factory, which produces explosives for industrial use, sits in a semi-industrial area on Nagpur’s outskirts. Workers were on their regular shift when the explosion ripped through the facility, destroying sections of the building and sending shockwaves across the neighbourhood.

Local residents reported hearing a thunderous boom that shattered windows in nearby homes. The scale of destruction suggests the explosion was powerful enough to level parts of the structure, complicating rescue efforts.

Among the critically injured, several have suffered severe burns and multiple fractures. Hospitals in Nagpur have declared a mass casualty protocol, bringing in additional medical teams and blood supplies to handle the influx of patients.

What Happens Next

The Maharashtra government has ordered a full investigation into the blast. Factory officials and safety inspectors will examine whether proper safety protocols were in place and if maintenance schedules were followed.

Authorities are also checking whether the facility had all necessary certifications and clearances to operate. Early reports suggest this could be a case of poor safety compliance, but investigators need to rule out equipment failure and other technical causes.

The state government has announced financial compensation for the deceased workers’ families. Chief Minister’s office has directed senior officials to oversee medical treatment for the injured at no cost.

This incident will likely push the Centre and state governments to tighten oversight of explosives factories across India. Industrial safety audits at similar facilities in Maharashtra and other states may now become more frequent and stringent.

For now, rescue operations continue at the site as teams search for anyone still trapped. The final death toll could rise as rescue work progresses through the evening.
