Nifty Near 24,400; Sensex Falls 500 Points In Early Trade

Indian equity markets opened on a weak note Wednesday, with the Sensex declining approximately 500 points in early trading. The GIFT Nifty, which serves as an early indicator of the Nifty 50’s performance, traded at 22,318, down from the previous close of 22,679.40.

The weakness in domestic indices reflects broader market concerns, with global crude prices rebounding sharply. Brent crude oil surged to $105 per barrel, a significant development for India’s import-dependent economy. Higher crude prices typically increase inflationary pressures and impact corporate margins across sectors, particularly energy and transportation.

Geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on investor sentiment, creating headwinds for equities. The ongoing instability in global markets has prompted cautious trading ahead of key economic announcements and corporate earnings updates.

Market participants are closely monitoring crude oil price movements and any escalation in international tensions, both of which could influence the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy stance. The NSE and BSE are expected to see volatile trading throughout the session as investors reassess their portfolios.

Analysts suggest investors remain cautious and focus on fundamentally strong stocks amid the current uncertainty. The expiry of February futures and options contracts may also add to intraday volatility, they noted.
