Sabdham OTT release brings relief for Hindi viewers, leaves Telugu audience wanting

Where can you finally watch Sabdham online? That’s the question Telugu cinema fans have been asking since the horror thriller hit theatres back in February. The good news is — it’s here. The not-so-good news? The digital release strategy has left a significant portion of the film’s core audience frustrated.

Sabdham, starring Aadi Pinisetty in a dark revenge drama, arrived on OTT platforms recently to mixed reactions. While Hindi-speaking viewers across India celebrated getting access to the film, Telugu audiences — the primary market where the film was made and released — found themselves disappointed by the limited availability in their native language.

What Went Wrong With the Release Strategy?

The film’s journey to OTT is where things got complicated. Directed by Arivazhagan, known for hard-hitting narratives, Sabdham was made as a Telugu film with Telugu sensibilities woven into its storytelling. Yet the OTT release seems to have prioritized Hindi dubbing and broader pan-Indian appeal over serving the original Telugu version with equal prominence.

Several Telugu film enthusiasts took to social media expressing frustration that the Telugu original wasn’t given the same platform push as the Hindi version. This has become a recurring complaint in Tollywood — where films made in Telugu sometimes get sidelined on digital platforms in favour of dubbed versions.

The timing also matters here. Releasing on OTT just a few months after the theatrical run meant the film had already lost much of its theatrical window momentum. For a niche horror thriller like Sabdham, which depends heavily on word-of-mouth in its home territory, this quick turnaround may have actually hurt its prospects.

Why This Matters for Telugu Cinema

This isn’t just about one film. The pattern reflects a larger challenge facing Telugu cinema — how films get distributed digitally in an increasingly Hindi-dominated OTT ecosystem. When streaming platforms prioritize Hindi content, it sends a message to Telugu creators about what audiences supposedly want.

Directors like Arivazhagan, who invest in original storytelling rooted in regional sensibilities, deserve equal treatment on digital platforms. Viewers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, who made the theatrical release possible, should have easy access to content in their language without having to hunt for the original version.

The Hindi audience gaining convenient access isn’t the problem itself — cinema should travel across language barriers. The issue is when that expansion comes at the expense of neglecting the original audience who showed up first.

As more Telugu films head to OTT, the industry needs to have serious conversations with streaming platforms about language parity. The Telugu film market has grown substantially, and it deserves a seat at the table, not just a dubbed footnote.
