The resolution, passed with a resounding 164 votes in favour and just one against, signals a departure from the commonly used Mercator projection and embraces a more equitable cartographic approach.
Why This Change Matters
For decades, the Mercator projection has been the standard for world maps, but its inherent distortions have long been a point of contention. This projection, developed in the 16th century, exaggerates the size of landmasses near the poles, making countries like Greenland appear larger than Africa, despite Africa being 14 times its size.
