UP Schools Extend Winter Break Until January 10 Due to Severe Cold

Uttar Pradesh has extended winter holidays for schools across the state until January 10 as severe cold continues to grip the region. The decision affects millions of students, with younger classes facing the longest closures.

Which Schools Are Closed and Why

Classes 1 through 8 will remain shut in five districts that are experiencing particularly harsh weather conditions. The state government took this step to protect students from extreme cold that poses serious health risks, especially for younger children who are more vulnerable to temperature-related illnesses.

Higher classes in these districts and schools across other parts of UP will resume classes on January 6, but the younger students get additional time off. This staggered approach balances safety concerns with educational continuity.

The decision comes as temperatures have dropped significantly across northern India. Parents and school administrators have welcomed the extension, recognizing that commuting in freezing conditions puts children at risk of cold-related health issues.

What Students and Parents Should Know

If your child studies in classes 1-8 in the affected districts, plan for them to return to school only after January 10. Schools will likely announce the exact reopening date after assessing weather conditions.

Parents in other districts should check with their respective schools, as local authorities may have issued separate directives. Some schools might have already extended holidays beyond the standard dates based on local conditions.

This isn’t the first winter break extension in UP. The state regularly adjusts school calendars during extreme weather to ensure student safety remains the top priority.

Teachers have been advised to prepare for online classes or alternative learning methods during the extended closure to keep students engaged academically. Many schools are using this time to conduct digital classes and assign homework so that learning doesn’t come to a complete halt.

Students can use this extra time for self-study, reading, or pursuing hobbies at home. The extended break also gives families more time together during the peak winter season.

The weather department predicts that conditions should improve by the second week of January, which is why authorities have set January 10 as the tentative date for reopening. However, if cold conditions persist, further extensions are possible.

Parents should ensure their children stay indoors as much as possible and maintain proper winter health precautions including warm clothing, hot meals, and adequate hydration. Keep an eye on official school announcements for any last-minute changes to the reopening schedule.
