MP Cold Wave Alert: Severe Chill Coming This Week

Madhya Pradesh is bracing for one of the harshest cold waves of the season. Weather officials have issued alerts across multiple districts warning of a severe temperature drop expected from January 22 to 24.

The mercury has already started falling steadily across the state over the past few days. But meteorologists say the real bite will come in the middle of this week, when conditions could become dangerously cold, especially at night.

Which Areas Will Be Hit Hardest?

Districts across central and northern MP are expected to face the worst of it. Places that sit at higher altitudes will experience particularly bitter temperatures. Early morning hours between 3 AM and 6 AM are likely to be the coldest period.

Farmers and rural residents need to pay special attention, as such extreme cold can damage crops, especially vegetables and winter produce that farmers have just planted. Animals too struggle during severe cold waves and need shelter and care.

What You Should Do Right Now

If you live in MP, start preparing immediately. Stock up on essentials before the 22nd—fuel, groceries, and medicines. Don’t wait until the worst arrives because extreme cold can make travel difficult.

Wear warm clothes in layers rather than one thick garment. This traps warm air better and keeps you comfortable. Make sure elderly family members and young children stay indoors as much as possible during peak cold hours.

Check on your neighbours, especially those living alone. Cold waves are serious health events in India, and isolated elderly people are particularly vulnerable. Keep your mobile phones charged because power cuts sometimes happen during extreme weather.

If you have outdoor workers or labourers, arrange for adequate shelter and warm food for them. Many Indian states have labour laws requiring employers to provide protection during cold waves, so know your rights.

What Happens After January 24?

Weather patterns typically start improving after the 24th, though it will remain cold for several more days. The meteorological department will continue monitoring and issuing daily updates.

Schools might announce closures or delayed opening—check official announcements from your district education board. Some offices also adjust working hours during severe weather.

This cold wave is a reminder that India’s winters can be as dangerous as summers, even though we don’t talk about them as much. Preparation and awareness are your best defences.

Keep checking weather updates regularly. Your local news channels and IMD (India Meteorological Department) website will have hourly forecasts. Stay warm, stay safe, and look out for those around you.
